J. Thomas Davis began building guitars in a basement workshop while working on a music degree in the mid '70's. The shop was moved to a storefront in Grandview Heights, Ohio in 1977 and relocated to the present location in 1993. The shop now employs four people dedicated to the service of fretted instruments (both electric and acoustic) while Tom spends his time building individual hand made instruments. J. Thomas Davis is a member of the Guild of American Luthiers and the Association of Stringed Instrument Artisans.
We specialize in both the
construction of fine individually made acoustic guitars as well as the
repair and maintenance of all fretted instruments. Our reputation has grown
far beyond the local area, in large part, due to our conscientious, personalized
service coupled with an extraordinary pride in workmanship.

Customer Comments:
"I can't begin to thank you enough for transforming my old ‘64 Gibson J-50 into something wonderful. It’s never sounded so good - the boomy bass sound has been toned down and now blends into the treble; it plays piano and forte and just keeps on ringing; best of all, perhaps, it feels just right to my hands." - Craig Packard, Kensington,
MD
"To date, you have set-up a Takamine 12 string and a Gibson SE reissue. Both guitars were new and I could not believe the difference in playability and sound quality after the set-up as compared to the 'shipping' set-up. Additionally, I recently brought in a third guitar desperately needed by my son for a weekend gig. The turn around was unbelievable and I am sure that the 'before and after' will be just as impressive as the previous jobs. You have all been very professional, helpful and the fees are extremely reasonable as I compare them to fees paid in the past to other shops, for basically the same work. My Gretsch Nashville will be your next 'visitor'." - Ron Vallera, Blacklick,
OH
"The guitar is perfect - you have some kind of magic touch." - John Bunge, Ithaca, NY |
"I played for the twice the time with half of the
effort last night! It sounds great too."
- Mike Morris, Granville,
OH
"Thank you for the set-up you did last week on my Collings guitar. It has never sounded better or felt more comfortable." - Andy Merrit, Columbus, OH
"My Takamine is a different instrument. It may be just another set up to you. To me, it’s a miracle!" - Charles Leader, Delaware,
OH
"The vintage Stratocaster was good when I brought it to you; it now plays like a dream. This is the fourth electric guitar setup you have done for me. What a great place America would be if everyone showed the attention to detail and doing it right the first time as you and your staff do." - William Allen, Columbus, OH |
